SPAIN — Lava flow: Lava from a volcano reached the sea on the Canary island of La Palma, on Wednesday. Lava from a volcano that erupted on Sept. 19 on Spain’s Canary Islands finally reached the Atlantic Ocean after wiping out hundreds of homes and forcing the evacuation of thousands of residents.

JAPAN — Walking: A man sat near a window as people walked along a pedestrian crossing in the Shibuya district on Thursday, in Tokyo. Fumio Kishida, the man soon to become Japan’s next prime minister, said he believes raising incomes is the only way to get the world’s third-largest economy growing again. Top of Kishida’s to-do list was another big dose of government spending to help Japan recover from the COVID-19 shock.

PORTUGAL — Pose: A member of the Afghanistan national girls soccer team posed for her father in front of the Belem Tower at a park by the Tagus river in Lisbon, on Wednesday. The girls and their families arrived in Portugal on Sept.19 after an international coalition came to their rescue.

CHINA — Martyr’s Day: A woman held a flower as she walked next to paramilitary policemen as they headed to pay respects to the People’s Heroes Monument during a ceremony to mark Martyr’s Day at Tiananmen Square in Beijing, on Thursday. Chinese President Xi Jinping paid respects at a solemn commemoration Thursday for those who died in the struggle to establish Communist Party rule, as he leads a national drive to reinforce patriotism and single-party authority.

GREECE — Border crossing: Sudanese girls sat inside an abandoned army outpost near Pierogi village, at the Greek-Albanian border, on Saturday. A relatively smooth section of Greece’s rugged border with Albania is turning into a major thoroughfare north for migrants in Greece seeking a better life in Europe’s prosperous heartland.
