VIRGINIA — Console: People consoled one another outside Heritage High School, near the tennis courts, following a shooting at the school, on Monday, in Newport News. Students were evacuated to the tennis courts and parents were allowed to reunite with them there.

SPAIN — Lava flow: Lava from a volcano engulfed a building near El Paso on the island of La Palma in the Canaries, on Monday. Giant rivers of lava were tumbling slowly but relentlessly toward the sea after a volcano, seen in the background, erupted. The lava destroyed everything in its path but prompt evacuations helped avoid casualties after Sunday’s eruption.

RUSSIA — Flowers: A woman laid flowers on a table as a police officer stood guard outside the Perm State University following a campus shooting in Perm, about 1,100 kilometers (700 miles) east of Moscow, on Tuesday. A student opened fire at the university, leaving several people dead and injured, before being shot in a crossfire with police and detained.

MEXICO — Border camps: Migrants, many from Haiti, waded across the Rio Grande river from Del Rio, Texas, to return to Ciudad Acuña, Mexico, on Monday, to avoid deportation from the U.S. The U.S. is flying Haitians camped in a Texas border town back to their homeland and blocking others from crossing the border from Mexico.
