JAPAN — State of emergency: Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga was seen through a teleprompter as he spoke during a news conference at his office in Tokyo, on Thursday. Japan announced on Thursday that it is extending a coronavirus state of emergency in Tokyo and 18 other areas until the end of September as health care systems remain under severe strain, although new infections have slowed slightly.

NORTH MACEDONIA — Fire: A police officer walked past burned hospital equipment on the site of a destroyed field hospital following a fire in Tetovo, early on Thursday. The fire overnight ripped through a field hospital set up to treat COVID-19 patients, leaving numerous people dead.

Joint military exercises of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) countries, including Russia, Kyrgyzstan, and others, were held in the Edelweiss range in Kyrgyzstan amid the situation in Afghanistan.
