BOLIVIA — Waving through a window: Bolivia’s former interim President Jeanine Anez waved through a window of Miraflores women’s jail to her supporters protesting for her release in La Paz, on Wednesday. Anez was placed in preventive detention in March 2021 on charges of terrorism, sedition, and conspiracy, in connection with the social unrest in Nov. 2019 that precipitated the resignation of then-President Evo Morales.

AFGHANISTAN — Flying flag: Taliban fighters displayed their flag on patrol in Kabul on Thursday. The Taliban celebrated Afghanistan’s Independence Day on Thursday by declaring that they beat the United States, but challenges to their rule ranging from running a country severely short on cash and bureaucrats to potentially facing an armed opposition began to emerge.

GREECE — Firefighting: A firefighter tried to extinguish the fire in a house during a wildfire in Thea, some 60 kilometers (37 miles) northwest of Athens, on Thursday. A major wildfire northwest of the Greek capital devoured large tracts of pine forest for the third day and threatened a large village as hundreds of firefighters, assisted by water-dropping planes and helicopters, battled the flames Wednesday.

VENEZUELA — Staying inside: Zenobia Ansualve ate lunch at her home in Caracas on Wednesday. The 88-year-old Ansualve, who lives alone and has not left her home since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, said she lives on $20 a month from a room she owns and rents.

IRAQ — Ashoura: Shiite Muslim worshippers practiced the “Tweireej run” ritual outside the holy shrine of Imam Hussein during a Muharram procession marking Ashoura, in Karbala, on Thursday.
