Lawyers acting on behalf of the U.S. government challenged a British judge’s decision to block the extradition of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to face espionage charges in the U.S., arguing that assessments of Assange’s mental health should be reviewed.

NEW HAMPSHIRE — Hermit evicted: David Lidstone, an off-the-grid New Hampshire hermit known to locals as “River Dave,” doffed his hat after speaking to media outside Merrimack County Superior Court after a status conference hearing, on Wednesday, in Concord. The court determined that Lidstone would be able to collect his cats, chickens, and remaining possessions from the site he lived on for 27 years. Lidstone, who believed he was not on private land, was permitted to hire a surveyor to give him “peace of mind,” Judge Andrew Schulman said.

RUSSIA — Volunteers: Volunteers paused while working at the scene of a forest fire near Kyuyorelyakh village at Gorny Ulus area west of Yakutsk on Saturday. Wildfires in Russia’s vast Siberia region endangered a dozen villages Saturday and prompted authorities to evacuate some residents.
