Speaking in a live call-in show Wednesday, Putin said that decisions by local authorities in a number of regions who made vaccination mandatory for some workers should help contain the new wave of infections and avoid a lockdown.

WASHINGTON — Cooling off: Cora Richardson, 7, cooled off in the Rotary Fountain at Riverfront Park on Tuesday, in downtown Spokane. According to the National Weather Service, Spokane experienced the hottest day on record on Tuesday as temperatures reached 109 degrees, breaking a previous high of 108 degrees set on Aug. 4, 1964.

CHINA — Centenary: Performers formed the number 100 at a gala show ahead of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Communist Party in Beijing on Monday. For China’s Communist Party, celebrating its 100th birthday on Thursday, July 1 is not just about glorifying its past. It’s also about cementing its future and that of its leader, Chinese President Xi Jinping.

BELGIUM — Hunger strike: A man on hunger strike was helped by a comrade as they occupied a big room of the ULB Francophone university in Brussels, on Tuesday. More than two hundred migrants without official papers who have been occupying a church and two buildings of two Brussels universities since last February began a hunger strike on May 23 to draw the attention of Brussels authorities to their plight.
