CHINA — Liftoff: A Long March-2F Y12 rocket carrying a crew of Chinese astronauts in a Shenzhou-12 spaceship lifted off at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Jiuquan on Thursday. China launched the first three-man crew to its new space station in its ambitious program’s first crewed mission in five years.

FRANCE — Election: Far-right leader Marine Le Pen gestured as she campaigned at an open air market in Six-Fours-les-Plages on Thursday. Although the winner of the June 20 and June 27 regional elections will only deal with local issues, Marine Le Pen’s Rassemblement National (National Rally) party could for the first time capture one of France’s 13 regions.

SOUTH KOREA — Over the border: Visitors viewed the North Korea side from the Unification Observation Post in Paju, near the border with North Korea, on Thursday. The official North Korean Central News Agency said on Wednesday that leader Kim Jong Un warned about possible food shortages and urged the country to brace for extended COVID-19 restrictions as he opened a major political conference to discuss national efforts to salvage a broken economy.
