TEXAS — New land: A child wept as he was unloaded from an inflatable raft after being smuggled into the United States by crossing the Rio Grande River in Roma on Sunday. Roma, a town of 10,000 people with historic buildings and boarded-up storefronts in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley, is the latest epicenter of families and children entering the U.S. to seek asylum.

INDONESIA — Fire: Cars passed by as fire razed through the Pertamina Balongan Refinery in Indramayu, West Java, early on Monday. Hundreds of people were evacuated from a nearby village after the massive fire broke out at the refinery.

Despite a steady rise in coronavirus cases, Pakistan on Monday launched a five-day vaccination campaign against polio amid tight security, hoping to eradicate the crippling children’s disease this year.

EGYPT — Pulling out: In this photo released by Suez Canal Authority, the Ever Given, a Panama-flagged cargo ship, was pulled by one of the Suez Canal tugboats, in the Suez Canal, on Monday. Canal authorities said that the 220,000-ton ship was “refloated” on Monday after blocking the major waterway for nearly a week.
