ALABAMA — Twister: On Thursday, residents surveyed the damage to homes after a tornado touched down south of Birmingham, damaging multiple homes. Authorities reported major tornado damage Thursday as strong storms moved through the state. The governor issued an emergency declaration as meteorologists warned that more twisters were likely on their way.

KENTUCKY — Hospital threat: Law enforcement members responded to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital in Lexington on Thursday. Police arrested an armed Kentucky man as he left the hospital after receiving a tip from another police department that he was in the area. A large police presence was at the University of Kentucky’s Chandler Hospital emergency room Thursday and university officials asked students and visitors to stay away from the area.

BANGLADESH — Clash: Two factions of protestors clashed after Friday prayers at Baitul Mokarram mosque in Dhaka on Friday. Witnesses said violent clashes broke out after one faction of protesters began waving their shoes as a sign of disrespect to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and another group tried to stop them. Local media said the protesters who tried to stop the shoe-waving are aligned with the ruling Awami League party. The party criticized the other protest faction for attempting to create chaos in the country during Modi’s visit.

GEORGIA — Arrested: State Rep. Park Cannon, D-Atlanta, was placed into the back of a Georgia State Capitol patrol car after being arrested by Georgia State Troopers at the Georgia State Capitol Building in Atlanta on Thursday. Cannon was arrested after she attempted to knock on the door of Gov. Brian Kemp’s office during his remarks after he signed into law a sweeping Republican-sponsored overhaul of state elections that includes new restrictions on voting by mail and greater legislative control over how elections are run.

COLOMBIA — Departure: Venezuelans carried their belongings after using a boat to cross the Arauca River, the natural border between Venezuela and Colombia, as they arrived in Arauquita on Thursday. Thousands of Venezuelans were seeking shelter in Colombia this week following clashes between Venezuela’s military and a Colombian armed group in a community along the nations’ shared border.

ISRAEL — Passover prep: An ultra-Orthodox Jewish man dipped cooking utensils in boiling water to remove remains of leaven in preparation for the upcoming Jewish holiday of Passover in Ashdod on Thursday. Jews are forbidden to eat leavened foodstuffs during the Passover holiday that celebrates the biblical story of the Israelites’ escape from slavery and exodus from Egypt. The week-long festival begins on Saturday.
