TURKEY — Foreign visitor: A protester from the Uyghur community living in Turkey stepped on a China flag during a protest against the visit of China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi to Turkey, in Istanbul, on Thursday. Hundreds of Uyghurs staged protests that denounced Wang Yi’s visit and demanded that the Turkish government take a stronger stance against human rights abuses in China’s far-western Xinjiang region.

CALIFORNIA — Protest for homeless: Police marched toward demonstrators in the Echo Park section of Los Angeles on Thursday. Demonstrators gathered Wednesday night to protest the planned temporary closure of a Los Angeles park that would displace a large homeless encampment, which has grown throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

JAPAN — Torch relay: The celebration cauldron was lit on the first day of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic torch relay in Naraha, Fukushima prefecture on Thursday. The torch relay for the postponed Tokyo Olympics began its 121-day journey across Japan on Thursday and was headed toward the opening ceremony in Tokyo on July 23.

CALIFORNIA — Rescue: Santa Rosa firefighters cleared the area around a car that plowed into a homeless encampment in order to free a woman pinned underneath the vehicle in Santa Rosa on Tuesday. Police were searching Wednesday for a man who crashed his vehicle into the homeless encampment, killing a woman and injuring a man before fleeing the scene on foot.

AUSTRALIA — High waters: A woman looked at debris caught on a submerged bridge in Windsor, northwest of Sydney, on Thursday. Emergency services made hundreds of rescues since the flooding began last week and insurance companies estimated the damage in New South Wales to exceed 1 billion Australian dollars ($760 million USD).

COLORADO — Funeral procession: On Wednesday, people looked on as a procession of emergency vehicles headed down Foothills Parkway to lead a hearse carrying the body of a Boulder Police Department officer who was one of 10 victims in the mass shooting at a King Soopers grocery store in Boulder. Boulder Police Department Officer Eric Talley was killed responding to the shooting attack on Monday.

IOWA — Comfort: Prison workers comforted each other after a news conference in front of the Anamosa State Penitentiary in Anamosa on Wednesday. Inmates used hammers to attack prison staff members during a failed attempt to escape an Iowa prison, killing a nurse and correctional officer, kidnapping a third employee, and severely injuring an inmate who intervened, authorities said Wednesday.
