EL SALVADOR — Paddle out: On Tuesday, surfers moved into the ocean for a paddle out in honor of Katherine Díaz Hernandez, a top surfer who was killed by a lightning bolt, in the waters off El Tunco beach in Tamanique. The 22-year-old was training on Friday at El Tunco beach when people on shore saw her get hit by lightning.

ICELAND — River of fire: People watched and took photos as lava flowed from Iceland’s latest volcano in Geldingadalur, on the Reykjanes Peninsula, on Tuesday. Crowds of people hoped to get close to the gentle lava flows. The eruption, near Iceland’s capital Reykjavik, was not seen as a threat to nearby towns and the slow flow meant people could get close to the action without too much harm.

GUATEMALA — Protection: Workers covered parts of a plane’s motor with plastic to keep volcanic ash from entering the engine at La Aurora international airport, which has been closed due to an eruption at the Pacaya volcano in Guatemala City, Tuesday.
