Rusty Blackbird, seen in February in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Called ‘rusty’ by birders because it spends so much time in wetlands and swampy woodland environments. Related to the larger Grackles, and seen in Brooklyn because it migrates south from Canada, it is one of the birds in our coverage that is actually endangered. The loss of its preferred swampy breeding environments to agriculture or human expansion has impacted the Rusty Blackbird on a large scale. Scientific name: Euphagus Carolinus. ‘Rusty’ edges to black feathers and a shorter tail distinguish it from more common Blackbird.
