ECUADOR — Bedridden: COVID-19 patients laid in beds in the cafeteria area, which was repurposed a few months ago to be able to treat more patients at the Institute of Social Security Quito Sur Hospital in Quito, on Tuesday. The hospital, which extended its services to residents who are not part of the social security system IESS, is full and there are dozens of coronavirus patients in intermediary care waiting to get into the ICU, according to Francisco Mora, hospital coordinator of Epidemiological Surveillance and Infectology.

BANGLADESH — Protest: Bangladeshi students clashed with police during a protest in Dhaka on Monday. About 300 student activists rallied in Bangladesh’s capital to denounce the death in prison of Mushtaq Ahmed, a writer and commentator who was arrested last year on charges of violating a sweeping digital security law that critics say chokes freedom of expression.

SENEGAL — Throwing stones: A demonstrator threw a rock at riot police during a protest in support of main opposition leader and former presidential candidate Ousmane Sonko, in Dakar on Wednesday. Sonko was arrested Wednesday on charges of disturbing the public order after hundreds of his supporters clashed with police while he was heading to the court to face rape charges.

UKRAINE — Vaccination: Ukrainian servicemen stood in line as they waited to receive a dose of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine marketed under the name CoviShield at a military base in Kramatorsk, on Tuesday. Ukraine plans to vaccinate 14.4 million people this year, or about 35 percent of its 41 million people.
