Letter to the Editor: February 25
New Yorkers deserve clean energy
Dear Editor,
National Grid wants to expand their fracked gas empire, locking us into fossil fuels by building the Metropolitan Reliability Infrastructure (MRI), locally known as the North Brooklyn Pipeline, a dangerous piece of infrastructure, which pollutes and threatens the health and safety of already marginalized communities. They are also trying to build a Liquified Natural Gas Vaporizer in Greenpoint, Brooklyn that would work in tandem with the pipeline. This project would increase toxic emissions, create a surplus of gas when demand for it is decreasing, and prevent steps towards energy efficiency and renewable energy opportunities.
Cuomo is responsible for the health and safety of New Yorkers and needs to show that he wants a cleaner, safer future. Regulators cannot continue to allow fossil fuel infrastructure to be built against the will of communities. Cuomo set ambitious climate goals for the state, but they’ll never be met while National Grid is allowed to continue this abusive behavior. The Public Service Commission has dismissed this issue for too long and needs to fund renewable energy solutions now. We, the people of New York need and deserve clean, affordable, and safe energy.
