Double-breasted Cormorant, seen in Brooklyn Bridge Park, January 2021. Voracious consumers of fish, this gangly fishing bird has been known to dive up to 25 feet. In Canada recently hunters in local areas were encouraged to reduce their populations, as fisherman found them to be troublesome competitors. Scientific name? Don’t ask (just kidding: Phalacrocorax auritus). Photo by Heather Wolf, author of BIRDING AT THE BRIDGEJoin the Eagle family of supporters and get daily updates and features (like bird of the day).
