BRAZIL — Racing for a remedy: A researcher for Brazil’s state-run Fiocruz Institute took an oral swab sample from a bat captured in the Atlantic Forest, at Pedra Branca state park, near Rio de Janeiro, Tuesday. INDIA — Farmer protests continue: Protesting farmer leaders shouted slogans as they sat for a day-long hunger strike at the Delhi- Haryana border, outskirts of New Delhi, Monday. Tens of thousands of protesting Indian farmers have called for a national strike on Monday, the second in a week, to press for the quashing of three new laws on agricultural reform that the farmers say will drive down crop prices and devastate their earnings.

POLAND — Abortion rights: Anti-government protesters held up images of the ruling party leader, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, in Warsaw, Sunday. Thousands of anti-government protesters demonstrated in Warsaw in the latest large protest after a high court ruled in October to further tighten the country’s already restrictive abortion law. Sunday’s protest was scheduled to coincide with the 39th anniversary of the 1981 martial law crackdown by the country’s communist regime.

JAPAN — Asteroid probe: This photo, provided by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), showed soil samples, seen inside a container of the re-entry capsule brought back by Hayabusa2, in Sagamihara, near Tokyo, Tuesday. Officials from Japan’s space agency said Tuesday that they have found more than the anticipated amount of soil and gases inside a small capsule the country’s Hayabusa2 spacecraft brought back from a distant asteroid this month, a sample-return mission they praised as a milestone for planetary research.
