AMERICAN CENTURY: Warren Harding was elected president 100 years ago today, on his 55th birthday. The 29th president was born in Ohio and made his name as a newspaper publisher. He was elected to the Senate as a Republican in 1914. As a presidential candidate, Harding promised a “return to normalcy” for a nation reeling from the aftermath of World War I, and won in a landslide in the first national election after women received the right to vote. He enjoyed popularity as president, but after his sudden death on Aug. 2, 1923, scandals involving his cabinet members and associates came to light, damaging his reputation. He was succeeded by Vice President Calvin Coolidge.
