A BORN LEADER: Dwight David Eisenhower was born on this day in 1890. The native of Denison, Texas, served two terms as the 34th president of the U.S. from 1953 to 1961. Nicknamed “Ike,” he held the rank of five-star general of the U.S. Army and served as supreme commander of the Allied forces in western Europe during World War II. Eisenhower’s popular presidency coincided with a postwar boom of prosperity and optimism. He died in 1969.
