A STAR IS BORN: Mickey Rooney was born in Brooklyn 100 years ago today. An outsized personality in a pint-sized package, he had a career that spanned nine decades on the stage and screen. Born Joseph Yule, Jr., he became a teen idol during the Depression and was Hollywood’s number-one box office star in 1939, 1940 and 1941. Among his best known films are the Andy Hardy series, “Babes in Arms,” “Boys Town” and “National Velvet.” He received honorary Oscars in 1939 and 1983. He died in 2014.

RAY OF LIGHT: Ray Charles was born 90 years ago today. The Georgia native began to lose his sight at age 5. He began formal music training at the St. Augustine School for the Deaf and Blind, and by age 15 he was earning a living as a musician. He went on to become one of the most influential performers of all time. His hits include “Georgia on My Mind,” “I Can’t Stop Loving You” and “America the Beautiful.” He was part of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s inaugural class in 1986. He died in 2004.
