HELL ON EARTH: Krakatoa erupted on this day in 1883. The explosion on the volcanic island in Indonesia was heard 3,000 miles away, created tidal wives 120 feet high (killing 36,000 people), hurled five cubic miles of earth fragments into the air (some to a height of 50 miles) and affected the oceans and atmosphere for years.

DIAMOND VISION: Major League Baseball was televised for the first time on this day in 1939. WXBS broadcast a doubleheader between the Cincinnati Reds and the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field. Announcer Red Barber interviewed Leo Durocher, manager of the Dodgers, and William McKechnie, manager of the Reds, between games.
