The Brooklyn Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP) is hosting a virtual “Chat and Chew” event with judges Hon. Elizabeth Stong and Hon. Ellen Spodek on Friday, July 31 at noon.

Justice Stong, who sits in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District, is a regular contributor to the VLP and often participates in continuing legal education seminars.

Justice Spodek, who sits in the Supreme Court, Civil Term, recently served as interim administrative judge of that court when Hon. Lawrence Knipel was briefly hospitalized with the coronavirus.

The two will take part in an open dialogue between the judges and members of the VLP as they discuss the difficult legal challenges that have arisen since the COVID-19 pandemic started.

The group will also discuss new initiatives launched by the VLP in response to the pandemic and will take questions from members. One of these programs offers free attorneys to settle family estates worth $50,000 or less in the Surrogate’s Court. The group has also offered CLEs on how COVID-19 has impacted child support cases, and it will help prepare life-planning documents for free to frontline healthcare workers.
