THE PRIDE OF POLAND: Pope John Paul II was born 100 years ago today. The 264th pope of the Roman Catholic Church was born Karol Wojtyla in Wadowice, Poland. Elected on Oct. 16, 1978, he was the first non-Italian to become pope in 456 years and the first from Poland. His theology was conservative and traditional and he was known for his worldwide travels to bring the message of the Catholic Church to people around the world. He survived an assassination attempt in 1981 and died at Vatican City on April 2, 2005. He was beatified on May 1, 2011.

HOT SPOT: Mount St. Helens erupted 40 years ago today. The volcano in southwestern Washington blew steam and ash more than 11 miles into the sky, resulting in 57 deaths and more than $1 billion in property damage. It has been called the most disastrous volcanic eruption in U.S. history.
