THE MUSIC MAN: Irving Berlin was born on this day in 1888. One of America’s most prolific songwriters, his greatest hits include “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” “White Christmas,” “God Bless America,” “There’s No Business Like Show Business” and “Puttin’ on the Ritz.” He was a recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He died in 1989 at age 100.
SURREAL DEAL: Salvador Dali was born on this day in 1904. A leading painter in the surrealist movement, he was equally well known for his baffling antics and attempts to shock his audiences. The largest collection of his works residents in the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Fla. He died in 1989.
