LET’S PLAY TWO: Two of baseball’s great parks opened on this day in 1912. In Detroit, Navin Field (later Tiger Stadium) was christened with a 6-5 home victory over the Cleveland Indians. In Boston, the Red Sox opened Fenway Park by defeating the New York Highlanders, 7-6. Both games went into extra innings.
DEEP TROUBLE: The Deepwater Horizon disaster took place 10 years ago today. The oil rig, operated by British Petroleum, exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, resulting in the largest offshore oil spill in U.S. history. The fire and explosions on the platform killed 11 workers and injured 17. The rig eventually sank, and the damage to the drilling equipment caused an unrelenting flow of oil from the well directly into the gulf, with extensive damage to marine wildlife and the surrounding coastal areas.

“There is only one thing more painful than learning from experience and that is not learning from experience.”
— poet Archibald MacLeish, who died on this day in 1982
