KNOWLEDGE IS POWER: “Jeopardy” premiered on this day in 1964. Known as “the thinking person’s game show,” it was created by Merv Griffin and hosted by Art Fleming until it went off the air in 1975. It returned briefly in 1978-79 but wasn’t restored to glory until its current incarnation, hosted by Alex Trebek, premiered in Sept. 1984.

BEAUTY IS TRUTH: Anna Sewell was born in Great Britain 200 years ago today. She published her only book, “Black Beauty,” in 1877. One of the bestselling novels of all time, it describes the abuse and injustices faced by working horses in Victorian England. Sewell died in 1878, not realizing the impact her novel would have.
