This is big news.

New York City’s Health Department launched an extra large condom on Friday. The release of the contraceptive, officially known as “NYC Legend XL,” coincides with Valentine’s Day and National Condom Day.

“City residents helped us select the design, so this is a condom by New Yorkers for New Yorkers,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot. “While the condom is new, the message stays the same — have fun but remember to use the tools that help you lead a healthier, safer sex life.”

The wrapper features a sleek gold coloring with an outline of the five boroughs and parts of New Jersey.

It’s the latest edition of NYC Condom, which debuted in 2007.

New York City has long been at the forefront of promoting safe sex. For more than half a century, it has passed out condoms at Sexual Health Clinics. The city’s Condom Availability Program gives out free condoms and lubricant at more than 3,500 locations citywide.

The Health Department distributed more than 31 million rubbers last year.

The city also provides education and technical assistance (think adult sex-ed) related to correct condom use.

There will be a party on Friday at Williamsburg’s Three Dollar Bill celebrating the launch of NYC Legend XL. Get there early to secure XL-themed t-shirts and “other swag.”
