Widely regarded as one of the greatest novelists of the Victorian Era, Dickens is best known for authoring “Oliver Twist” (1837), “A Christmas Carol” (1843) and “Great Expectations” (1861), although he first achieved literary fame through the 1836 serial publication of “The Pickwick Papers,” which was published when he was 24 and working in as a parliamentary secretary and freelance journalist. Dickens next became editor of literary magazine Bentley’s Miscellany, until he fell out with the owner and started writing “Oliver Twist.” Dickens died in 1870.
