NOTABLE PEOPLE BORN ON THIS DAY include actor and comedian Chris Rock, who was born in 1965; journalist, human rights activist and politician Tawakkol Karman, who was born in 1979; singer-songwriter Garth Brooks, who was born in 1962; actor, producer and entrepreneur Ashton Kutcher, who was born in 1978; comedian, actor and political activist Eddie Izzard, who was born in 1962; literary journalist Gay Talese, who was born in 1932; former basketball player Steve Nash, who was born in 1974; basketball coach and former player Juwan Howard, who was born in 1973; and actor James Spader, who was born in 1960.

JOURNALIST-TURNED-AUTHOR Charles Dickens was born on this day in 1812. Widely regarded as one of the greatest novelists of the Victorian Era, Dickens is best known for authoring “Oliver Twist” (1837), “A Christmas Carol” (1843) and “Great Expectations” (1861), although he first achieved literary fame through the 1836 serial publication of “The Pickwick Papers,” which was published when he was 24 and working in as a parliamentary secretary and freelance journalist. Dickens next became editor of literary magazine Bentley’s Miscellany, until he fell out with the owner and started writing “Oliver Twist.” Dickens died in 1870.

AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL WORDSMITH Laura Ingalls Wilder was born on this day in 1867. Wilder began her writing career as a columnist and editor for the Missouri Ruralist. Her column, “As a Farm Woman Thinks,” discussed current events and family life. Wilder in 1932 first published her autobiographical manuscript, “Little House in the Big Woods,” which achieved commercial success and was the first volume of her “Little House on the Prairie” book series. The series would go on to sell tens of millions of copies and would inspire a popular television series, which ran from 1974 to 1983. Wilder died in 1957.
