GREAT AMERICAN POET Philip Levine was born on this day in 1928. Levine worked in Detroit’s auto factories starting at age 14. He later said, “The irony is, going to work every day became the subject of probably my best work.” Levine was known for his portraits of working-class Detroit residents and for his examination of his Jewish immigrant inheritance. He received the National Book Award for poetry in 1980, the Pulitzer Prize in 1994 and the American Academy of Poets’ Wallace Stevens Award in 2013. He was named U.S. poet laureate in 2011. Levine taught for over 30 years at California State University, Fresno, as an English professor, and died in 2015.
