NOTABLE PEOPLE BORN ON THIS DAY include singer-songwriter and actress Pat Benatar, who was born in Brooklyn in 1953; actor and comedian Jemaine Clement, who was born in 1974; singer-songwriter Rod Stewart, who was born in 1945; former boxer George Foreman, who was born in 1949; Olympic decathlete Bill Toomey, who was born in 1939; actor Evan Handler, who was born in 1961; U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt, who was born in 1950; U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen, who was born in 1959; and presidential advisor, investor and real-estate developer Jared Kushner, who was born in 1981.

GREAT AMERICAN POET Philip Levine was born on this day in 1928. Levine worked in Detroit’s auto factories starting at age 14. He later said, “The irony is, going to work every day became the subject of probably my best work.” Levine was known for his portraits of working-class Detroit residents and for his examination of his Jewish immigrant inheritance. He received the National Book Award for poetry in 1980, the Pulitzer Prize in 1994 and the American Academy of Poets’ Wallace Stevens Award in 2013. He was named U.S. poet laureate in 2011. Levine taught for over 30 years at California State University, Fresno, as an English professor, and died in 2015.

A PROGRAM FOR ADAPTATIONS, PBS’s “Masterpiece Theatre” premiered on this day in 1971. The company’s longest-running anthology series, the show broadcast a collection of original and adapted dramatizations, many of which were produced by the BBC. The show’s hosts have included American-British writer Alistair Cooke, American journalist Russell Baker and American actress Laura Linney. Its first presentation was “The First Churchills,” which told the story of John Churchill, first duke of Marlborough. Today, the series’ title has been shortened to “Masterpiece.”
