Simmons, who was born in 1955; Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, who was born in 1982; actress Joely Richardson, who was born in 1965; BMX rider Mat Hoffman, who was born in 1972; singer-songwriter and actress Crystal Gayle, who was born in 1951; golfer Sergio García, who was born in 1980; former basketball player Muggsy Bogues, who was born in 1965; actress Nina Dobrev, who was born in 1989; and former Gov. KEPT THEM DOGGIES ROLLIN’: The Western TV series “Rawhide” premiered on this day in 1959. The show told the story of cattle drovers Gil Favor (Eric Fleming) and Rowdy Yates (Clint Eastwood), who often came across trouble on the trail. The show ran for seven and a half years, until its final episode in 1966. It was the sixth-longest-running classic Western, after “Wagon Train,” “The Virginian,” “Bonanza,” “Death Valley Days” and “Gunsmoke.”

ICONIC ‘60s ACTOR Bob Denver was born on this day in 1935. Best known for playing Gilligan on the show “Gilligan’s Island” and Maynard G. Krebs on the show “The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis,” Denver also performed on Broadway and in several films. Denver’ s performance as Gilligan on “Gilligan’s Island” made the character an American cultural icon. Denver died in 2005.

AVIATION LANDMARK: Jean-Pierre Blanchard, the same man who first crossed the English Channel via balloon, made the first manned free-balloon flight in U.S. history on this day in 1793. President George Washington looked on as Blanchard floated from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to western New Jersey.
