Scattered snow showers and strong winds could blow into the New York City area tonight, according to the National Weather Service, with the potential for snow squalls mainly through the afternoon.

The federal agency issued a wind advisory for the city through midnight, with 15 to 25 mph winds and up to 50 mph gusts possible.

The New York City Emergency Management Department also issued a hazardous travel advisory through Wednesday night due to the aforementioned conditions. Drivers are asked to exhibit extreme caution, allow for extra travel time and take public transportation.

A snow squall, according to the city, is “a sudden, intense period of moderate to heavy blowing snow lasting around 30 minutes to 1 hour. These squalls produce strong wind gusts that may cause brief whiteout conditions, limiting visibility and making travel extremely dangerous.”

If caught in a snow squall, motorists are encouraged to drive slowly and use their headlights.
