HARLEM RENAISSANCE WRITER Zora Neale Hurston was born on this day in 1891. Known for her 1937 novel “Their Eyes Were Watching God,” Hurston was a key figure of the Harlem Renaissance and wrote about racism in the early 20th century in the American South. Hurston also researched folklore in the Caribbean and American South. She died in 1960.

MACABRE CARTOONIST Charles Addams was born on this day in 1912. Addams was the creator of the Addams Family cartoons, many of which were first published in The New Yorker and have since been adapted to other media. Addams published many best-selling anthologies of his work, like “Drawn and Quartered” (1942), “The Groaning Board” (1964) and “Creature Comforts” (1981). He died in 1988.

OFF TO THE LAND OF NOD: Today is National Bobblehead Day. Bobbleheads first appeared in 17th-century south Asian temples as tiny nodding Buddhas. The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum sponsors this day. It can be visited in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
