FRENCH PATRON SAINT Joan of Arc was born on this day in 1412. She is known for leading a French army to liberate the English-occupied city of Orléans after claiming to have received visions from saints telling her to support Charles VII during the Hundred Years’ War. French forces won the city only nine days after their arrival, but Joan was captured by a group of English-allied French nobles and put on trial. She was convicted of witchcraft and heresy and burned at the stake at the age of 19. In the early 20th century, she was canonized as a Roman Catholic saint.
