Hate Crime Task Force investigating anti-Muslim crime at T.J. Maxx
The NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force is investigating an anti-Muslim incident at a Bay Ridge clothing store on Saturday, in which a customer shouted “Go back to your country!” at a woman wearing a hijab and her husband, then attempted to knock a cellphone out of the husband’s hand.
The scene unfolded inside T.J. Maxx at 502 86th St. around 1 p.m., according to police.
Mido Mourad, a 41-year-old Egyptian journalist living in New York, said in a statement that he was shopping with his wife for winter clothes for their children when the two were approached at the store’s checkout counter by a woman who shouted, “Go back to your country!” The suspect also cursed at the couple.
