A man died in East New York Sunday night after his car swerved into the wrong lane and smashed into a parked garbage truck, police said.

The driver, Zackariah Johnson, was heading east on Cozine Avenue in East New York when he veered his Toyota Camry into the westbound lane around 9 p.m. Johnson smashed into a parked Department of Sanitation garbage truck, and his car caught fire, police said. The garbage truck was unoccupied.

A passerby removed Johnson from the vehicle before cops arrived on the scene, according to police. When NYPD officers got there, he was on the street next to the car, unconscious.

Johnson was taken to Brookdale Hospital, where he died.
