Man shot to death in Flatbush Avenue bodega near Prospect Park

A man was fatally shot after an argument broke out inside a Prospect Lefferts Gardens bodega Thursday night, just one block away from Prospect Park.

According to police, 41-year-old Dwayne Smith was shot in the chest sometime at around 10 p.m. inside of KHF Supermarket at 709 Flatbush Ave.

Smith, who lived nearby on Lennox Road, was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Cops say he was gunned down by a man wearing a black or blue Adidas tracksuit, who fled in an unknown direction following the fatal shooting.

There have been no arrests and the investigation is ongoing. Police were still on the scene Friday morning.

A friend of Smith told News 12 the victim was a father, and that he was “trying to make a difference for the youth in his neighborhood.”

Shootings are up nearly 5 percent citywide, according to police data. In the 71st Precinct, where the fatal shooting occurred, such incidents are down nearly 50 percent; there were 19 shootings last year, and 10 this year up to Oct 6. All major crimes in the precinct have dropped significantly in the precinct, except grand larceny auto, which is up 40 percent.
