SUPERHEROES OF THE FRONT LINE: It’s Emergency Nurses Day, which honors trauma nurses, code nurses, triage nurses, disaster response nurses, flight nurses, military nurses, geriatric nurses, critical-care transport nurses and many other first responders. This day was established by the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA), which has over 40,000 members, publishes a peer-reviewed journal, and gives trainings and certifications to emergency nurses. The New York State ENA was the organization’s first offshoot and represents over 2,000 nurses throughout the state.

VIOLENCE, SCIENCE, SILENCE: On this day in 2009, NASA crashed its 2.2-ton LCROSS spacecraft into the moon’s south pole to see if the moon’s craters contain water ice. The impact kicked up a mile-high cloud of debris that was then searched for water particles, confirming that water does exist on the moon.

A BEARY SPECIAL DAY: Today is National Bring Your Teddy Bear to Work Day. Teddy bears can reduce anxiety and loneliness in children. Why shouldn’t they do the same for adults? Show up to work with your fuzzy friend in tow and see if you can’t get a few smiles.
