RHYMES OF THE RURAL MIDWEST: James Whitcomb Riley, writer, best-selling author and one of the most popular poets of the 19th century, was born on this day in 1849. Riley was known for his sentimental works and his children’s poetry, and published Rhymes of Childhood, his most successful book, in 1891. He came to be known as the “Hoosier Poet.” Riley died in Indianapolis, Indiana on July 22, 1916.
