RHYMES OF THE RURAL MIDWEST: James Whitcomb Riley, writer, best-selling author and one of the most popular poets of the 19th century, was born on this day in 1849. Riley was known for his sentimental works and his children’s poetry, and published Rhymes of Childhood, his most successful book, in 1891. He came to be known as the “Hoosier Poet.” Riley died in Indianapolis, Indiana on July 22, 1916.

GIVE YOUR HERO A SQUEEZE for National Heimlich Heroes Month, which begins today. The Heimlich Maneuver can be performed by anyone, regardless of size and strength, and is easy to learn and to implement. This week celebrates individuals who have used the maneuver to save a life. Dr. Henry Heimlich invented the technique to save choking victims, calling it the “sub-diaphragmatic abdominal thrust,” in 1974. It was renamed by the news media.

SPACE-AGE TRASH DAY: Today is World Habitat Day, as organized by the United Nations. This day offers an opportunity to reflect on global living conditions and the basic human right to adequate shelter. This year’s theme focuses on frontier technologies and their contributions to sustainable waste management. Frontier technologies include robotics, automation, artificial intelligence, biotechnologies, electric vehicles and renewable energy technologies.
