RIGHT ON TRACK: James Cleveland (Jesse) Owens was born on this day in 1913 in Oakville, Alabama. While attending Ohio State University, Owens won eight NCAA championships, and at a single track meet in 1935, in the span of 45 minutes, Owens broke three world records and tied a fourth. Owens won four gold medals at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany, helping to destroy Hitler’s myth of Aryan supremacy on a global stage. He is ranked by ESPN as the greatest track and field athlete of the 20th century. Owens died on March 31, 1980.

GAMING WORLD SEES NO LAG: Today is National Video Games Day. The first video game was invented in 1947, a “cathode ray tube amusement device” which used vectors to simulate target-practice missile firing. In recent years, virtual reality has used a combination of stereoscopic screens and motion tracking that allows games to feel more like real life than ever before. At the same time, games have become a bigger part of real life than ever before since the 2010s, gaming has become one of the largest sectors of the global entertainment industry.

NO BULL: Michael Jordan was signed by the Chicago Bulls on this day in 1984, kicking off an era that would win him six championships in the ’90s and would catalyze the NBA’s global appeal. In 2014, Jordan became the first billionaire player in NBA history. He’s also a pop culture icon and is widely considered to be the greatest basketball player of all time.
