THE FOUNDER OF THE U.S. LUTHERAN CHURCH, Henry Melchior Muhlenberg, was born on this day in 1711. Mulenberg was born in Einbeck, Germany and immigrated to the U.S. in 1742 to set up Lutheran congregations. He began in Pennsylvania and worked through the East Coast until he was able to convene the first Lutheran assembly in the U.S. in 1761. He died in Trappe, Pennsylvania in 1787.

JOSEPH P. KENNEDY was born on this day in 1888 in Boston. He was a prominent businessman and government official, working as a bank president, a movie producer and a shipbuilder, and later the first Irish-American U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom. His children John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy and Ted Kennedy all went on to have political careers. He died in Massachusetts in 1969.

THE BALTIC STATES were recognized as independent by the Soviet Union on this day in 1991, 51 years after they were annexed by the Soviet Union following the end of WWII. Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania had already declared their independence and been recognized as sovereign states by other countries.
