EMMETT TILL WAS KILLED on this day in 1955. Till, a 14-year-old African-American from Chicago, was in Money, Mississippi to visit relatives. He was accused of making advances to a white woman, attacked by a white mob and murdered. His mother Mamie Till insisted on an open-casket funeral, and the photos of Till’s badly mutilated body sparked outrage. The men who attacked Till were acquitted by an all-white jury, and later admitted in an interview with “Look” magazine that they had killed Till.
