MOTHER THERESA was born on this day in 1910 in modern-day North Macedonia. She became a nun and founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950, performing extensive missionary work in Calcutta, India, where she lived for most of her life. In 1979, she received the Nobel Peace Prize for her work. She died in 1997 and was canonized in 2016.

THE FIRST COMMERCIAL OIL WELL was tapped on this day in 1859, when W.A. “Uncle Billy” Smith discovered oil in a well being drilled by Edwin Drake in western Pennsylvania, sparking the first oil boom in the United States. The well started producing 20 barrels of crude oil each day, which was refined to make kerosene for lighting, replacing whale oil.

PRESIDENT LYNDON B. JOHNSON was born on this day in 1908. Johnson assumed the presidency after John F. Kennedy’s assassination in 1963. He was re-elected in a landslide against Sen. Barry Goldwater in 1964. During his time in office, Johnson expanded civil rights, Medicare and Medicaid, and secured funding for education and the arts. He drew criticism for escalating the Vietnam War. He died in 1973.
