DOROTHY PARKER was born on this day in 1893. The poet, critic and author known for her wit wrote for Vanity Fair, and was an original contributor to The New Yorker. She was a member of the elite New York City writers group the Algonquin Round Table. Parker was arrested at a Sacco Vanzetti rally in 1927 and her left-wing politics earned her a spot on the Hollywood blacklist in 1950, just as she was gaining momentum as a screenwriter. She died in 1967.

THE BATTLE OF STALINGRAD began on this day in 1942, when the Nazis began an offensive maneuver to capture the Russian city. Stalingrad’s population shrank from 500,000 to 1,515 during the protracted fighting. An estimated 1,480,000 were killed on all sides in the struggle, which ended when the last German soldiers surrendered to Russian forces on Feb. 2, 1943.

RAY BRADBURY was born on this day in 1920. The American sci-fi writer is remembered for his novels “Something Wicked This Way Comes” and “Fahrenheit 451.” Bradbury received a Pulitzer Prize in 2007 for his distinguished career. He died in 2012.
