COCO CHANEL was born on this day in 1883 in Saumur, France. She started her career in a millinery shop, and quickly became a fashion leader, and later, the most important designer of the 20th century. Chanel was known for liberating women from the corset, borrowing men’s staples (pants) for women’s wear, making use of costume jewelry, and popularizing the “little black dress.” She was also the first designer with a signature perfume: Chanel No. 5, which still sells a bottle somewhere in the world every 30 seconds. Chanel died in Paris in 1971.

ORVILLE WRIGHT was born in Dayton, Ohio on this day in 1871. Along with his elder brother Wilbur, Wright pioneered American aviation. The Wright brothers are credited with building the world’s first power-driven airplane and conducting the first free flight in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina in 1903. He died in Dayton in 1948.

SPUTNIK 5 was launched by the USSR from the Baikonur spaceport in southern Kazakhstan. The artificial satellite was the first spacecraft to launch and then recover living organisms from space. Dogs Belka and Strelka were aboard the craft, along with mice, rats, houseflies and plants. All were returned safely to Earth the next day.
