Two Brownsville women were found dead in separate incidents Monday night and early Tuesday morning just a mile apart and within hours of each other, police said Tuesday morning.

The first woman was found in an apartment around 11 p.m. on East 96th Street near Winthrop Avenue. Police were responding to a wellness check at the location and found the 52-year-old woman unconscious with no signs of trauma. She died at the scene.

Just hours later, around 2:30 a.m., police found a 33-year-old woman with stab wounds to her abdomen outside a building on Mother Gaston Boulevard. She was taken to Brookdale hospital where she died. Police recovered a knife at the scene.

The stabbing may have been self-inflicted, police said.

Both investigations are ongoing and the exact causes of death will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
