The Brooklyn Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP) announced on Thursday that it is adding a new member to its board of directors — Michael Leahy, who is a senior vice president, deputy general counsel and head of litigation at the American International Group (AIG).

“With Mike’s deep connection to Brooklyn and true passion for our mission, we are thrilled to welcome him to the VLP’s Board of Directors,” said Stephen Williamson, nominating committee chair of the VLP’s board of directors. “His wealth of knowledge and expertise within the legal and nonprofit sectors will be instrumental in strengthening the VLP’s impact and strategic organizational development.”

The VLP says that the move is part of its effort to reach out to the larger Brooklyn community to engage with new leaders.

“I’m excited and honored to become a part of this great organization and look forward to doing all I can to support and expand its efforts on behalf of our community,” Leahy said.

Leahy recently took part in the VLP’s partnership with the Bridge Street Development Corporation through which he and other attorneys from AIG volunteer to help with efforts to aid Bedford-Stuyvesant homeowners avoid tax liens that can cause them to lose their homes.
