ESTÉE LAUDER was born Josephine Esther Mentzer in Queens on this day in 1906. Her uncle, John Schotz, was a Hungarian chemist who made cosmetics for women. Young Josephine started making cosmetics of her own while in high school, and in 1946, she started a business that would eventually become one of the world’s largest and most successful makeup companies. When she died in 2004, she was among the 500 richest women in the world.

THE FIRST NEWSPAPER PHOTOS were published on this day in 1848. The daguerreotype images were taken by a photographer known only as Thibault from a rooftop during the Paris Riots. The images were the first instance of photojournalism, and appeared in the weekly newspaper, L’Illustration Journal Universal. At least 3,000 were killed during the June revolt.

THE FIRST U.S. POSTAGE STAMPS were issued on this day in 1847, when the Post Office began selling five cent stamps with an image of Benjamin Franklin, and 10 cent stamps honoring George Washington. Prior to this date, private postal companies had issued postage stamps.
