The Kings County Democratic Party held its annual gala at El Caribe in Mill Basin last Thursday and honored five including former Borough President Howard Golden, who received the Hon. William C. Thompson Memorial Award.

Democratic Party Chair Hon. Frank Seddio and Frank Carone served as hosts for the party that drew more than 300 members of the local political and legal communities.

In addition to Golden, George Gresham, president of 1199 SEIU, United Healthcare Workers East; Assemblymember Peter J. Abbate; Meera Joshi, former chair of the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission; and G. Jack Spatola, chair of the Federation of Italian American Organizations of Brooklyn, were honored.

The party typically gives party bosses and district leaders an opportunity to rally people to common causes. Unity was a theme amongst many of the speakers, who included Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul. Defeating President Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election was another rallying cry.

This was the first year the party gave out the Judge Thompson Memorial Award, which was named after the late judge who died on Christmas eve last year. The judge, known to his friends as Willy, was Brooklyn’s first black state senator and later became its first administrative and appellate division judge.
