‘Wintery mix’ makes for slippery commute

The evening “wintery mix” will cause slippery grounds and slower commutes, Mayor Bill de Blasio warned at a press conference Tuesday afternoon.

“It’s going to be tough on the way home,” he said. The freezing snow and sleet will continue through the evening rush hour.

“What we expect later on is a lot of ice, very slippery conditions,” he said. The MTA will continue to salt and sand the train stairs and platforms throughout the day. The MTA recommends that commuters exercise caution by walking slowly and using handrails. Anticipate delays and plan for extra travel time.

De Blasio suggested using mass transit on Tuesday instead of driving back home on the dangerous and messy roads.

The Mayor also said that there is “every expectation that school[s] will be open tomorrow.”

Additionally, alternate side parking regulations will be in effect tomorrow, and garbage will be collected.

The National Weather Service predicts rain and sleet will continue until 7 p.m., when it turns to rain. Temperatures are expected to increase over night, but sleet could come back after midnight.

Tomorrow will be cold and windy, and there may be flurries after 1 p.m.
