BETTY FRIEDAN WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1921. The cofounder and first president of the National Organization for Women was born Bettye Naomi Goldstein in Illinois. She was an outspoken feminist who spent her entire career crusading for women’s rights. Her book “The Feminine Mystique” chronicled the frustrations of the 1960s American housewife, to which she referred as “the problem that has no name.” The book struck a chord with millions of women and is widely regarded as one of the most influential books of the 20th century. Friedan died in Washington, D.C., in 2006 on her 85th birthday.

FACEBOOK LAUNCHED ON THIS DAY IN 2004. Mark Zuckerberg and fellow Harvard students Dustin Moskovitz, Chris Hughes and Eduardo Saverin launched “TheFacebook” as a social networking site. Facebook, later dropping “The,” quickly became an Internet sensation, reaching 901 million users by March 2012. The site currently has more than 936 million daily users (83 percent of whom live outside North America) and is offered in 70 languages. On May 18, 2012, Facebook went public, with a volume of 567 million shares trading that day.

THE APACHE WARS BEGAN ON THIS DAY IN 1861. The period of conflict known as the Apache Wars began at Apache Pass in Arizona, when army lieutenant George Bascom arrested Apache chief Cochise and other tribe members for raiding a ranch. Bascom killed Cochise’s brother, but Cochise escaped and declared war. The wars lasted 25 years under the leadership of Cochise and, later, Geronimo.
