The Brooklyn Bar Association has postponed a continuing legal education lecture on wrongful convictions that was scheduled for Jan. 10, but despite that it will still be a busy month on Remsen Street as the association already has three other events scheduled.

Former Administrative Judge Barry Kamins was set to host a CLE titled “Wrongful Convictions: Causes and Preventions” on Thursday, Jan. 10 with a panel that included Assistant District Attorney Mark Hale, but the discussion has been postponed for now. The BBA plans to reschedule the CLE, but officially released a new date in time for this article to be published.

That event has been replaced on the schedule by three other events including a lecture hosted by the Foundation Law Committee called, “Consumer Debt and Bankruptcy: The Process, Defenses and Options.”

The bankruptcy event, hosted by attorneys Fern Finkel, chairwoman of the Foundation Law Committee, and BBA Secretary Richard Klass, is an annual talk that is meant for the public. It’s free of charge and is designed to help Brooklynites know their rights and options when it comes to filing for bankruptcy.

Events at the bar association are usually geared towards attorneys and not the general public, which is why this one is hosted by Finkel and Klass, two attorneys who are very well versed in the material and used to handling questions from the public.

The two CLEs scheduled for January include one on Tuesday, Jan. 8, on matrimonial mediation with Justice Jeffrey Sunshine, the New York state coordinating judge for matrimonial cases, and another on Wednesday, Jan. 16 on the #MeToo movement.

The Jan. 8 CLE is titled “How Matrimonial Mediation can enhance your practice: An introduction to the Kings County Presumptive Matrimonial Mediation Pilot Project” and it is expected to draw a big crowd because in addition to Justice Sunshine, the panel includes Aimee Richter, immediate-past president of the BBA; Carrie Anne Cavallo, president of the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association; RoseAnn Branda; Jean Norton; and JoAn Pangilinan-Taylor.

Branda, a past president of the BBA, is coming off back-to-back appearances on the TV show “Brooklyn Savvy,” where she discussed the state of divorces in New York City.

The final CLE on schedule is titled, “How #MeToo is Changing the Legal Landscape,” and will feature Gena Usenheimer and Nila Merola as the speakers. They will discuss the best ways to prevent sexual harassment and recent changes to the law at the federal, state and local levels.
